I quilt because it is the most exciting medium I have ever experienced: the colors, the crispness, the textural qualities, the layers and depth. My approach to art quilting is to create a heavily textured canvas background upon which to bring forth abstracted natural beauty. All materials are 100% cotton cloth, thread and batting, some hand-dyed by me, and all of the highest quality available. The colors and quilting are most often serendipitously discovered as I work in a collage style allowing the fabric and ideas to take life of their own.

I work out of my home space, called Pine Tree Studio, with views of 50 foot trees, deer and the glorious Rocky Mountain foothills to call out inspiration. The old craft of quiltmaking carries deep layers of meaning: from the warmth of utility quilts made from loving hands of family and the security of being wrapped in bedclothes as children to the layers of cloth, batting and thread that build the quilt itself. My art work draws on these fundamental human connections and blends images and designs to convey emotion and the beauty of the world.

I learned traditional hand-piecing and quilting with hand-made plastic templates in 1979 when I was 14 years old. I did not quilt again until I was 30 years old and expecting my first child. In between, I received degrees in Counseling Psychology and lived overseas in Germany, Singapore and Australia. I have now been quilting since 1996 and seriously creating art quilts since 2001, though almost exclusively by machine. I have tried my hand at traditionally patterned quilts for the bed, but my true passion is found in creating free-formed, art quilt wall hangings.

In the summer of 2007, on a week-long artists' retreat in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state, I was introduced to jewelry making and instantly connected the same draw to color, shape, form and texture as I had been doing with quilting.

Creating is a balancing act with a growing family, but a passion for art propels me to explore these mediums and share a bit of beauty with others.
